A good local donation can help a family put food on the table, access healthcare or get support during a difficult month. The best Muslim charity for your gift depends on which of those needs you want to address.
We selected five charities whose work addresses needs within the United States. Their approaches range from food assistance to neighborhood health and civil liberties. Our separate US transparency guide includes American organizations delivering aid overseas; this one asks a more local question: what kind of help do you want your community to receive?
The numbers behind the choices
| Charity | Transparency score (%) | Program score (%) | Overhead score (%) | Completion score (%) | Halal score /10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CAIR | 85% | 45% | 55% | 76% | 5.9 |
| Muslims Giving Back | 85% | 100% | 0% | 74% | 7.8 |
| IMAN | 85% | 100% | 0% | 86% | 8.0 |
| Zakat Foundation | 85% | 81% | 19% | 86% | 7.9 |
| ICNA Relief | 84% | 94% | 6% | 88% | 8.0 |
Program, overhead, transparency and completion values are stored 0 to 100 assessment scores shown as percentages. They are not audited financial ratios, guarantees about how donations are spent or observed project-completion rates.
ICNA Relief combines the highest completion score here, 88%, with a 94% program score and 8.0/10 halal score. That supports its place as a broad domestic choice. IMAN ties its halal score and has a different, Chicago-focused service model. CAIR's 5.9/10 halal score, 55% overhead score and legal-screen finding make it a more qualified inclusion: it is relevant to civil rights, not our strongest all-metrics recommendation.
The recorded funding and connection checks pass for all five. CAIR's legal-screen entry concerns a disputed 2014 UAE designation that was not adopted by the US government; it is not a finding of wrongdoing by a US court. The other four legal checks pass. These describe the recorded screening scope, not universal clearance or fund-specific Zakat eligibility.
5. CAIR: civil rights and community advocacy
CAIR's Legal Advocacy and Know Your Rights programmes address a different need from food or cash assistance: protecting rights and helping people respond to discrimination.
CAIR earns its place because it addresses a need that material aid does not: defending a person's ability to work, study and practise their faith without discrimination. Legal Advocacy deals with responding to rights-related problems, while Know Your Rights addresses public understanding. That combination makes it the most relevant choice here for civil liberties, rather than immediate household essentials.
4. Muslims Giving Back: practical community service
Muslims Giving Back focuses on food drives and community service, making it a practical option for donors who want direct, community-based activity.
Its mission specifically includes mobilizing Muslim volunteers for food drives, clothing distributions and community service. The case for supporting it is therefore practical participation as well as supplies: it offers a way for communities to organize around immediate needs. It is a better fit for that purpose than a specialist legal organization. The financial record used here is from 2022, so it is not evidence of a current-year delivery budget.
3. Inner-City Muslim Action Network: health and rebuilding lives
IMAN combines a Health Clinic and Green ReEntry with community organizing and support in underserved neighborhoods.
Both listed projects are based in Chicago. Healthcare and re-entry support address different barriers to stability, which explains why IMAN ranks above a narrower direct-service model in this guide. A donor who wants to support neighborhood wellbeing over time has a clear reason to consider it. That is a judgement about its programme mix, not a claim that this record proves better long-term health or employment outcomes.
2. Zakat Foundation: a domestic Zakat option to investigate
The database includes a US Domestic Zakat project alongside international programmes. That distinction matters if your intention is specifically to support eligible recipients in America.
Its distinguishing feature is the explicit domestic Zakat programme, not simply its US headquarters. The same record lists a Gaza Emergency Fund and global Orphan Sponsorship, so a general donation and a gift intended for US recipients are not interchangeable. It ranks second because it gives donors with a local Zakat intention a more directly relevant route than a broad community-service description.
1. ICNA Relief: a broad starting point for domestic assistance
ICNA Relief's Food Pantry Network and Refugee Support Program operate in the United States, alongside a mission that includes disaster relief and health services.
Its FY2024 project allocations put $28.3 million into Hunger Prevention and $11.3 million into Refugee Services. Against the $56.8 million programme-expense figure, those are approximately 49.8% and 19.9% respectively. These allocations make the domestic-assistance focus tangible: food is not a minor side project. They describe historical programme allocations, not a promise that the same proportions apply to each gift.
The combination of hunger prevention and refugee support is why ICNA Relief leads this domestic shortlist. Food insecurity and the practical difficulties of resettlement can overlap; an organization listing both offers a broader match for donors concerned about household stability. IMAN is the more specific choice for Chicago-based health and re-entry work, while Zakat Foundation is the more explicit match for domestic Zakat.
Turn the list into a useful decision
Our recommendation: choose ICNA Relief for a broad domestic-assistance focus, Zakat Foundation for its explicitly listed US Domestic Zakat programme, IMAN for Chicago community health and re-entry, Muslims Giving Back for volunteer-led practical service, and CAIR for civil liberties. These are different donation purposes, not substitutes for one another.
The value of Zakat+ is connecting these programme differences with financial records and reporting periods in one place. Pro's detailed breakdowns and side-by-side comparison add financial context to the choices explained here, rather than leaving you with five names and no reason to choose.
Before donating, confirm the appeal's location, intended recipients and current delivery plans. For Zakat, also check the distribution policy for the specific fund. Good intentions become more practical when the donation route matches the need.
